Halo Neuroscience

Mobile app redesign

What is Halo Sport
Halo Sport is a brain stimulator that helps you develop muscle memory faster. It works by applying a small electric current to the area of the brain that controls movement, putting it into a state of hyper-learning.

01. Problem

The Halo Neuroscience app is how the user controls the stimulation from the headset. Our goal was to take the app from the initial MVP to an experience that would allow users to get the most out their Halo Sport headsets.

02. Research

To stay focused on the user, we asked our established base of customers what was working and what could be improved in our experience.

Insights
Our research led to insights into how people use the product and what they wanted to see improved.

Tracking

Users wanted to see historical data to be able to track their results

Content

More information to help people get started, to educate them about the science and keep them motivated

New sessions

Additional sessions for musicians (this is beyond the scope of the software product but was added to the hardware/firmware roadmap

“Would like to see logs & stats in the app.”

“Strategies would help - if you’re a runner, here’s what you should be thinking about. Here’s how to maximize the hour. I think that would be really useful.”

- User quotes

03. Solution

Tracking and content

We focused on engagement and education. For us this meant activity tracking  and content. We began with competitive analysis giving us insights into common patterns.

Wireframes

Tracking: Wireframing allows for quick exploration of ideas. Goal setting and streaks as well as a dashboard and history had potential. We prioritized history and reminders.

Content: Finding patterns that provide easy access to a breadth and depth of videos and other educational materials.

Profile screen detail

  1. User profile header is the foundation for future functionality. Show Athlete or Musician.
  2. Stats dashboard allows basic tracking.
  3. Session history provides accountability and context.

Reminder screen

Reminders drive engagement and lead to users seeing better results. The initial implementation is like a workout preview, reminding you of a set time each day.

Explore screen detail

  1. Rotating featured content to keep section fresh and allow for cross functional collaboration.
  2. Dynamic content from cms.
  3. Content categories based on feedback: Stories, Results, Science and Training.

04. Results

Positive response from users

Response from users through usability testing and customer support was positive. From the release through to the end of the year we saw our app store rating improve eventually reaching 4.6 on Itunes and 4 on the Playstore and our retention improved by 2%.

Learnings:

While it is important to move quickly and iterate if the organization is not able to move forward you are left with features that feel incomplete. Given our time and resource constraints we built a solid foundation for a richer feature set down the road. We were not able to fully expand on the what we had started due to organizational challenges. In the future, I think the way to overcome this is a strong commitment to a shared vision of  the product.
